Chapter 18

I wait with lungs neither full nor empty. My entire being in stasis. Waiting on what is to come.

Outrageous. Incomprehensibly barbaric. Ridiculously...ridiculous. No other words can define this tradition.

Why would I let Cat offer me up like a lamb to the slaughter?

It was the ambrosia.

Shifting against the restraints, reseating myself into a kneeling position to alleviate the pinpricks in my lower extremities. How long have I been here? Naked?

I should not have drunk that witches’ brew!

I wanted to test her theory. I didn’t believe it. And the quickest way to end an experiment is to start it.

An offering of supplication. That my ‘one true love’ will come and find me. And if he does, true love will come for all the others too.

“Ha!” I breathe my incredulity out into the quiet tent. At least she promised to come back for me in an hour. How long have I been here?

I still hear the drumming, but it seems very far off. Muffled. Maybe the tent is spelled for more than just warmth and comfort.

A shift of the air, the faintest disturbance gives rise to goose bumps along my flesh.

It breaks the wait, causing me to suck in oxygen in preparation. For what?

Eyes blindfolded, body incapacitated, the senses I rely upon are smell and hearing.

The warm earthy scent of fur, pine, citrus, and animal. Barely perceptible footfalls on the carpeted floor.

So faint is the scent and sound, that I second guess if I even detected them or my mind has made it all up in boredom.

A brush of warm fur across my left side; No, I haven’t imagined it. There is someone here with me.

Not just a someone, a wolf.

A puff of hot breath against my leg, the presence of him known by the radiating heat of his body. His muzzle sniffs delicately between my thighs and I squirm away in shyness, pressing my face into my arm.

The body moves away, leaving coolness where there was once heat.

My heart hammers inside my chest. The minutes stretch.
